David Tennant To Present Comic Relief

By Mark
It was officially revealed yesterday that David Tennant will be presenting the first hour of this year's Comic Relief alongside Davina McCall. As well as presenting the actual Comic Relief telethon on the thirteenth of March, David will also be narrating Comic Relief: The Fools' Guide on the third of February at 22:35pm on BBC One. Speaking on a pre-recorded video screened at The Empire Cinema, David said;

"It’s a great honour for me. I remember the first Red Nose Day when I was at school, buying the t-shirt and everyone joining in, And then, later, at drama school, me and my mate Alan McCue formed a Proclaimers tribute act and went busking in Sauchiehall Street. We were rubbish, but earned £65 in our lunch hour. The people of Glasgow are very generous."

Previous Doctor Who related Comic Relief events include; Catherine Tate's comedy sketch with David Tennant, the inclusion of Doctor Who chocolates in last year's Red Nose boxes, David Tennant's appearance in the music video for the charity single "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" and Billie Piper's appearance in the advert for WalkEARs. All money raised for Comic Relief goes to a fantastic cause and you can visit the official website for Comic Relief here. You can also view more Comic Relief images of David Tennant here, here and here.

Filmings Begins On This Year's Specials

By Mark
Filming for this year's special episodes of Doctor Who will begin tonight and preparations already seem to be taking place at a museum in Cardiff. The cast and crew will be filming now for the next few months and will be completing most, if not all camera work for the four specials. If you want to keep up to date with all the latest on set reports then the best place to go would be the Doctor Who Forum. There's a whole thread dedicated to on set reports for the specials and you can view that thread here. Registration to the forum is free but you may have to wait a few days for your account to be activated and confirmed. We may post the odd on set reports here on this site but if we do then they won't be the major ones as we respect that a lot of fans would rather not see some of the spoilers. I'd just like to take this time to wish everyone working on Doctor Who the best of luck when filming the specials and hopefully everything will go as planned.

New Billie Piper Interviews

By Mark
Billie Piper has recently revealed that she is happy with both the casting of Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor and the way her character Rose left at the end of Doctor Who series four in Journey's End. She revealed these opinions in recent interviews with TV Guide and IGN. Quotes from both of the interviews can be viewed below;

Talking about Rose's departure at the end of series four: "I was pleased with it. You kind of want to go with Doctor #1, but it just couldn't be. But it's fun. It was great, and an adventurous and epic finale to the show. I was pleased, and it's always really good fun to go back and do [Doctor Who].

Talking about the casting of Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor and some of the fans reactions regarding his age: "The fans get so concerned about these things, and they should just relax. It's going to be fine. They're in good hands. He's a stirring actor, and he has the right energy. That's what the Doctor's is about, essentially — having that energy that you just can't understand. I'm a big time fan of Matt, I love him. David [Tennant] has joked about me playing The Doctor, but ... I don't think the Doctor should be a woman. It's like going, 'Let's make James Bond a woman.' It's a man's role."

Talking about whether or not she would return to Doctor Who: "I don't know, It's hard. Sometimes you just want to leave something behind, and then you see an episode and are like, 'God I really want to do it!' You change your mind all the time."

Direct links to both of the interviews can be found here and here. Billie Piper played The Doctor's companion, Rose Tyler, in the first two series of Doctor Who and then returned for the last three episodes of Doctor Who series four. She is currently working on many other projects including; Secret Diary of a Call Girl and could possibly return to Doctor Who sometime in the future. What do you think of these new interviews with Billie Piper?

Russell T Davies Talks Planet of the Dead

By Mark
Russell T Davies has revealed in the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine that Planet of the Dead will feature not one but two new species of alien. After the recent return of the Daleks and Davros in the series four finale and the return of the Cybermen in The Next Doctor, Russell thought it was time for some new monsters to be introduced and said;

"After the events of Journey's End and The Next Doctor, I think it's time to get away from the past and have an adventure with lots of new elements. And lots of fun too! The next Special should be a nice antidote to Christmas, with a bit of sunshine if we're lucky. And with not one but two alien races that you've never seen before."

Filming for this special will begin on Monday and the episode is planned to transmit on BBC One around Easter. David Tennant will be reprising his role as The Doctor in the episode and three more specials will follow later this year. You can view more information about this episode here in a previous post and new information will also be posted as soon as it becomes available. What do you think of this news? Are you looking forward to Planet of the Dead?

Torchwood Captain Jack and the Selkie

By Mark
Titan Magazines have recently revealed that John Barrowman will be writing a comic strip with his sister, Carole, for the fourteenth issue of Torchwood Magazine. John is well known for playing the role of Captain Jack in both Doctor Who and Torchwood and came up with the idea for the comic strip's plot when working on his autobiography, Anything Goes. You can view extracts from interviews with John's sister Carole and Torchwood magazine's editor Martin Eden below;

Martin Eden: "I'm so excited to be working on this story, John and Carole are an absolute pleasure to work with. Believe me, the readers are in for a treat!"

Carole E. Barrowman: "When John and I were working on Anything Goes, we spent a lot of time together on the Torchwood set. In between our storytelling and moments of inspired silliness (maybe one or two), we decided we’d like to work on a project together that involved Captain Jack. The role of myth in a culture’s zeitgeist has always intrigued John and I (it probably intrigues all sci-fi fans) so when I got back to the US, I sent John a short story I’d written, ‘The Tale of the Selkie.’ Almost immediately he called and said, ‘This should be our first Captain Jack tale."

The comic strip will feature in Torchwood magazine's fourteenth issue which will go on sale on the nineteenth of February. The title of the story will be "Captain Jack and the Selkie" and it will see Captain Jack face a deadly threat on a remote Scottish island. People are mysteriously disappearing and Jack has to find out who or what are taking them and what he can do to prevent it from happening. More information will be posted as soon as it becomes available. Are you looking forward to reading John and Carole's Torchwood comic strip?

For months, people have been disappearing, and the Sheriff has imposed a strict curfew across the city, his militia maintaining control over the superstitious populace with a firm hand, closing the city to outsiders. Is it fear of attack from beyond the city walls that drives him or the threat closer to home? Or does the Sheriff have something to hide? After a terrifying encounter with a deadly Krillitane, the Doctor realises the city has good reason to be scared.

Each of these books will go on sale at an RRP of £6.99 and all three of them are set for release on the third of September.
