Episode Review : Series 3 Episode 11 "Utopia"

By Mark
Main Characters: The Doctor (David Tennant), Martha Jones (Freema Ageyman), Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman), The Master (Derek Jacobi and John Simm)

Basic Storyline: The Tardis lands in Cardiff to refuel, while at the “Pit Stop” as Martha describes it, The Doctor notices that the Rift has been active. Captain Jack Harkness runs towards the Tardis as it starts to dematerialise. Jack manages to grab onto the Tardis. Jack is then left clinging on to the Tardis as it flies through Time and Space to the end of the universe.
Martha and The Doctor step outside to find Jack on the floor. Quickly running in to the Tardis to get the first aid kit, Martha examines Jack telling the Doctor he is dead. However Jack is revived after a few minutes, because of the fact that Jack can’t die.
However Jack, The Doctor and Martha aren’t alone on the planet Malcassairo. The futurekind are chasing humans for prey, what The Doctor describes as a “Manhunt”.
Chased to the transport site, The Doctor, Martha and Jack meet Professor Yana and his insect like assistant Chantho. Professor Yana needs help with spacecraft to Utopia, and he confronts The Doctor for help. The Doctor manages to fix one part of the ship but he needs to fix another involving a room where there is tons of radiation. The Experimental Drive is the room, one man loses his life attempting to do it. He lost his life due to a Futurekind smashing the power systems. Realising they need a man who can’t die to go in the room , Jack heads into the room.
While in the room Jack and the Doctor have a long talk about what happened since The Daleks had killed Jack on Satellite Five. Jack then realises Rose brought him back to life using the time vortex. The Doctor realises how Jack got back to Earth using his vortex manipulator.
Jack successfully does the job for the experimental drive but not everything is going to plan where Martha is. Professor Yana is hearing the sound of drums in his head and while talking to Martha he takes out his fob watch identical to The Doctor’s (used in “Human Nature and “The Family Of Blood”). Martha runs to The Doctor to tell him. Gallifreyan text Is on the fob watch and the Doctor explains what they are used for , to change Time Lord DNA into Human DNA. Jack and Martha then realise that The Doctor isn’t the last of the Time Lords and say to The Doctor
“That’s Good, Right?”
The Doctor replies “It Depends which one”
Professor Yana opens the fob watch turning himself into The Master. Now we realise what The Face Of Boe meant in Gridlock when he says “You Are Not Alone” meaning he isn’t the last of the timelords. Also the initials of “You Are Not Alone” spell out YANA as in Professor Yana.
The Master opens the gate letting the Futurekind in and shuts the Doctor, Martha and Jack out. Chantho then pulls out her gun and threatens The Master, however the Master gets her first and knocks her out. With her last bit of Life Chantho shoots The Master. Jack breaks the seal on the locked door and manages to get to the Master with the Doctor and Martha. However The Master goes into the Tardis and locks the doors. The Master then regenerates. The Doctor pleads The Master to stop but he simply refuses and flies off in the Tardis, leaving The Doctor, Jack and Martha stopping the Futurekind in because Jack broke the lock to get in.
Exciting Stuff. The story follows on in “The Sound Of Drums”

Favourite Lines:
“You Two We Are at the end of the universe, right at the very edge itself and you’re busy, Blogging!” (This is a funny line and also because this website is blogging, the quote is now on the sidebar of the page)

AND

“Captain Jack Harkness and who are you?” as well as “Maybe Later Blue *Wink*”

My Favourite Scenes:
1) The Scene where the Doctor, Jack and Martha are running from the Futurekind.

AND

2) The Master’s Regeneration and the whole sequence where Professor Yana opens the watch to become The Master.

A Song which I personally think would go well into the episode: "Heyo Captain Jack” by Iko Iko because Jack is back in this episode.
