Episode Review: Series 3 Episode 12 "The Sound Of Drums"

By Mark

Main Characters: The Doctor (David Tennant), Martha Jones (Freema Ageyman), Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman), The Master (John Simm)

Basic Storyline: Continuing from “Utopia” , The Doctor, Martha and Jack materialise in a London Alleyway using Captain Jack’s Vortex Manipulator. They are on the search for The Master , seeing Vote Saxon posters everywhere and Harold Saxon on the big television screen, they realise they missed the election. Mr Harold Saxon is The Master and he needs to be stopped.
Tish Jones (Martha’s Sister) questions Harold Saxon (The Master) on what she is meant to do. Harold Saxon replies “Just Stand their and look beautiful”. Mr Saxon then proceeds to the cabinet room where he calls the cabinet members a load of traitors. They are traitors because they abandoned their political parties and jumped on the “Saxon Bandwagon”. Harold Saxon explains they need a reward and he places a gas mask on and kills them by activating jets of poisonous gas.
Journalist Vivien Rook carries out an interview with Mr Saxon’s wife, Lucy Saxon. In the interview she warns Lucy that Mr Saxon is dangerous and he didn’t exist 18 months ago, that his entire life is a lie. However Mr Saxon (The Master) is at the door and he introduces Vivien to his friends , the Toclafane who brutally murder Vivien.
Meanwhile The Doctor , Martha and Jack are at Martha’s Flat where they research that famous “Harold Saxon”. They find out about Archangel which Martha explains she has it’s a phone network owned by The Master and The Master can hear all conversations which take place by the Archangel Network.
The Master then makes a televised appearance telling the world that tomorrow the world will have first contact with aliens , telling them The Toclafane would appear in the public eye. The Doctor recognises the name Toclafane which he says is a Gallifreyan Fairytale Villain and it couldn’t possibly them.
Realising there is a bomb on the back of the Television, Jack, Martha and The Doctor run outside the house just missing the explosion. Martha phones her mum to check everything is ok there, Francine insists that Martha comes round telling her that her and Clive are going to try and get back together. When the phone is passed to Clive, Martha asks
“Just say yes or no, Is Anyone there?”
Clive shouts yes, warning Martha to keep away. A Sinister woman who works for Saxon orders the police to arrest the Jones family. Martha arrives at Francine’s house but is forced away from gunfire by the Police.
Far away from Francine’s house, Jack tells Martha to abandon the car. Martha then phones Leo to warn him however the conversation is interrupted by the Master as he owns the Archangel Network. The Doctor takes the phone of Martha and explains what happened to Gallifrey, The Timelords and The Time War. The Master explains that he was resurrected by The Timelords to fight in The Time War, but he ran away, scared of the Daleks. He then informs the Doctor that they are now Britain's most wanted terrorists and tells them to run, noting that Jack's friends (Torchwood Team) have been sent on a wild-goose chase in the Himalayas.
A Toclafane appears near the Master asking him when it will be ready. The Master replies
“8.02 am”, 2 minutes after first contact.
The Doctor, Martha and Jack hide in an abandoned building as they are “Britain’s Most Wanted”. In this building Jack explains the story of “Torchwood” and how he joined. The Doctor explains gallifrey and the children of gallifrey. Vivien Rook the journalist who got killed by the Toclafane , sent a message before the interview with Lucy to Torchwood. The Video explains about Archangel. The Doctor realises The Master is hypnotizing people, making them Vote Saxon with a four rhythm beat which is the “The Sound of Drums” he hears in his head.
The Doctor adds a perception filter to the Tardis keys and gives one to Jack and Martha and keeps one for himself , this making them unnoticed.
UNIT (United Nations Intelligence Taskforce) meets up with Harold Saxon to discuss “First Contact”. They decide to meet on the “Valiant”. Using Jack’s Vortex Manipulator, The Doctor, Martha and Jack follow onboard the Valiant. They find the TARDIS onboard the Valiant. The Doctor hears the sound of the cloister bell. The Tardis is not as it should be though as they realize when they enter it has been turned into a “Paradox Machine” and is now red inside. The trio head to the room where “First Contact” is taking place. The Doctor suggests if he gets the Tardis key around The Master’s neck the public would see him for who he really is.
First contact begins on live transmission with Us President Arthur Winters leading the television broadcast. Harold Saxon then reveals himself as The Master and the Toclafane kill the president.
The Master then kills jack temporarily with his laser screwdriver. The Laser screwdriver also can perform the process which “Lazarus” performed in “The Lazarus Experiment”. He can change biological information and de-age or olden people. All he needs is The Doctor’s biological data which he has thanks to The Doctor’s severed hand of Jack’s.
The Master then ages The Doctor 100 years turning him into a feeble old man. Then he brings Martha’s family in to witness.
The Paradox Machine is ready and 6 million Toclafane appear from a massive rift above the Valiant. The Toclfane are killing humans all over Earth and it is mass destruction.
The Master refuses to reveal the true identity of the Toclafane telling The Doctor it would break his two hears to know. Martha then teleports to Earth, saying she will come back.
The story continues in “The Last Of The Timelords”

Favourite Lines:“We used to call it the shining world of the solar system and on the continent of wild endeavour the mountains of solace and solitude there stood the citadel of t he timelords. The oldest and mighty race in the universe, looking down on the galaxies below, sworn never to interfere only to watch”

AND

The Master’s Lines
“What this country really needs is a Doctor.” and
“Here Come The Drums!"

My Favourite Scenes:
1) The Scene Where there are flashbacks of Gallifrey with The Doctor explaining to Martha and Jack. Also The scene where Martha, Jack and The Doctor are wandering the streets with the keys of the Tardis, the perception filter is on and they have to act as ghosts. Another Scene is where Martha’s flat gets exploded and when The Doctor, Martha and Jack get in the car, driving. (Great Music)

AND

2) The Scene where the Toclafane come from the sky with the music “Voodoo Child” playing and the scene where Martha has transported away using the Vortex Manipulator.

Quite easy for Tish to just stand there and look beautiful. She's HOT! Even the Master knows it.

Something to say?
